Rishi Sunak Officially Becomes UK’s Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak is officially UK’s 57th Prime Minister.

The member of parliament was on Tuesday invited by King Charles III to form government.

Sunak whose father was born in Kitale, Kenya, will occupy Downing Street and will be the youngest Prime Minister in the last two centuries.

He is the third Prime Minister to hold office this year after Liz Truss resigned last week after serving for a mere 49 days.

After his win, Sunak warned that the country was facing a “profound economic challenge”, as he ruled out an early general election.

Addressing the nation outside 10 Downing Street after his appointment by King Charles, the former Finance minister said, “I will unite our country — not with words, but with action”.

The failed Truss budget, according to Sunak, was intended to spur economic growth, but its tax-cutting policies were “mistakes nonetheless.”

“And I have been elected as leader of my party and your prime minister in part to fix them,” he said.

“And that work begins immediately. I will place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda.”

Just before leaving Downing Street, Truss wished Sunak “every success” and stated that she was “more convinced than ever” that Britain needed to be “bold” in addressing its problems.

Sunak defeated rival contenders Penny Mordaunt, who was unable to get enough support from Conservative MPs, and ex-premier Boris Johnson, whose re-election bid was abruptly thwarted, to become the party’s new leader on Monday.

Johnson broke his silence and pledged Sunak his “full and wholehearted support” after blaming his former minister for overthrowing him in July.
