President Ruto’s Intervention Saved Mwangaza from Impeachment – Waiguru

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru says her Meru counterpart Kawira Mwangaza would not have survived impeachment had it not been for President William Ruto.

Speaking on Sunday, the two time governor said it was due to the head of state’s intervention that Mwangaza is still in office.

“I want to thank you President Ruto because if it were not for you my sister Kawira would not have survived. We promised to unite as governors to support Mwangaza,” she said during a thanksgiving ceremony held at the Nanyuki Stadium.

Waiguru revealed that governors and other leaders asked the president to intervene as Meru MCAs sought to push out the former Woman Rep after only 112 days in office.

She urged local leaders to remain calm as deputy president Rigathi Gachagua attempts to unite Meru leaders.

Mwangaza was impeached on December 14 and was accused of nepotism, illegal appointments, unlawful dismissal of the constitution and statutory functions of county organs.

She was also accused of appointing her husband Murega Baicu as the Hustlers Ambassador and Youth Patron alongside other roadside appointments including those of her sisters and other county workers.

But on December 30, the senate rejected her ouster saying the accusations were unsubstantiated.

The Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale-led committee said: “After the consideration of charges made against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, all 11 members of the Special Senate Committee agreed and recommended that none of the charges was proved.”

Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that the legislators would neither debate nor vote on the motion.

“Honourable senators, the committee has found allegations against the governor not substantiated,” he said.

“According to standing orders, if the special committee recommends that allegations have not been substantiated, further proceedings shall not be taken in respect of those allegations,” the speaker ruled.

“As far as the matter of impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza, that matter is now put to rest.”
