Sakaja Commends Nairobians For Electing Passionate MCAs As He Holds First Caucus

Governor Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi has praised the city residents for choosing ward representatives who are enthusiastic about making a difference.

The governor shared pictures of himself with several MCAs in Mombasa for a caucus on Saturday on Twitter.

“My people of Nairobi; you chose well. These MCAs are really passionate about making a difference,” Sakaja said.

“We shall work together and make Nairobi a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunity for all. Let’s make Nairobi Work. Asanteni sana (thank you very much),” he added.

Azimio affiliated MCAs announced on Friday that they would miss the caucus because the Supreme Court was still deliberating on the presidential petition.

The ward reps-elect, led by Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok claimed they were following specific instructions from the Azimio leadership.

“We have clear instructions from our coalition about that Sakaja caucus…we are still in court challenging presidential results and we have not time to discuss issues of assembly Speaker. He can do that with his UDA team,” Imwatok said.

Moses Ogeto, the deputy minority whip and the ward rep for Kilimani, questioned the funding for the Mombasa trip that the newly inaugurated governor had planned.

He said that ward representatives with ties to Azimio would not show up to the caucus if the expense was covered by the county government.

“As Azimio MCAs we will really want to know whether taxpayers money was spent on people who have not been sworn in as MCAs,” Ogeto said.

Mountain View MCA Maurice Ochieng urged the former senator to refrain from “sideshows”, noting that the caucus was hastily organized despite the fact that MCAs were yet to take oath of office.

“How can the governor call for such a caucus and we have not even been sworn in? What’s the hurry and our leaders are still in court?” he posed.

The County Assembly will sit for the first time on September 9. They will then pick the assembly speaker.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance won 45 seats while Kenya Kwanza bagged some 36 seats. As a result, the Raila Odinga-led faction will run the assembly.

Kileleshwa MCA-elect Robert Alai has been touted as the favourite to take over from Imwatok.
