Sakaja’s Gubernatorial Bid in Limbo As CUE Revokes Team University Degree

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja’s degree from Team University in Uganda has been canceled by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

The Commission received relevant information about the legitimacy of the Bachelor of Science in Management degree, a letter dated June 14, 2022 shows.

According to the commission, the degree will be scrutinized further to determine its authenticity.

“Consequently, in accordance with the CUE recognition procedures, we hereby revoke the recognition of your degree from the aforementioned university,” CUE chairman Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha said.

The commission had written to the senator on June 6 to confirm the certificate’s recognition.

Four people have questioned the validity of Sakaja’s Team University degree, claiming it is phoney.

Sakaja was allowed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on June 7 to run for Nairobi governor on a UDA ticket.

Dennis Wahome, one of the complainants, asserts in an affidavit to the IEBC that Sakaja never attended or graduated from Team University.

He said that Sakaja’s Team University Bachelor of Science in Management degree was printed on May 29, 2022 at 10 pm, a claim he said can be substantiated by an IT expert.

Sakaja never graduated from the University on October 21, 2016, as claimed, according to Wahome, because his name does not appear on the university’s graduation list.

In fact, he stated, Team University discontinued the Bachelor of Science in Management degree program in 2015, a year before Sakaja allegedly graduated.

The Senator, on the other hand, has maintained that his academic credentials are legitimate.

The IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee is hearing the case, and a decision will be delivered later today.

On Monday, the University of Nairobi deleted Sakaja’s name from the list of alumni graduates.

Sakaja’s name previously featured right above the late former vice president Prof George Saitoti’s on the university’s website under the Faculty of Science and Technology.

He had been listed as having graduated with a degree certificate in Actuarial Science.
