YK92 Now Ruling Kenya – Orengo Alleges

Siaya Governor James Orengo has claimed that the current administration is a reincarnation of the Youth for Kanu 1992 (YK92) movement.

Orengo claimed that the current administration, which is led by President William Ruto and is made up of individuals who were formerly YK92 lieutenants, has begun to rule with an iron fist.

He outlined how KANU’s more than 24-year rule—particularly its leadership under the late President Daniel Moi—was characterized by lawlessness.

“This government is not better than YK92. YK92 is now ruling the republic of Kenya. You can count them one by one; this is YK92,” he said.

Orengo made these remarks in reference to President Ruto’s decision to suspend four IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission) commissioners.

The four are; Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit, and Francis Wanderi.

Mr Nyang’aya has since resigned. He quit shortly after their Friday suspension.

The President had earlier appointed a tribunal to probe their conduct during the tallying and declaration of the August 2022 results at the Bomas of Kenya.

The governor criticized the suspension of the four, claiming that they were being punished for exercising their right to free speech.

“Had these four commissioners supported the outcome of the election, they would not have been taken to the tribunal. They are being persecuted for the decision they made under the constitution,” he said.

He added: “The constitution says that you cannot be punished if you are making a decision on the basis of powers, authority and jurisdictions granted upon a constitutional office, especially when it is an independent commission.”

He claimed that the government was weakening Kenya’s constitution, which grants the Kenyan people sovereignty and establishes independent officers and offices.

Opiyo Wandayi, the minority leader in the National Assembly and a member of parliament from Ugunja, claimed that the “Cherera 4” were only not adequately protected in the house because of suspected biases.

“We are taking the issues to the people so that they can have a say on the same,” he said.

“The public meetings will be held on December 7 and 12 at Kamukunji grounds in Nairobi.”
