Mudavadi Rejects Invite to Attend Raila’s Azimio la Umoja Convention

Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi has rejected an invite to attend the much anticipated Azimio la Umoja convention.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga is expected to declare his presidential bid on Friday at the Kasarani Stadium.

On Tuhrsday, however, Mudavadi who a co-principal in the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) said he would not attend the convention “because of personal engagements”.

He noted that tomorrow will be Raila’s day “in the sun” as he asserted that he (Raila) is a formidable opponent.

“I have just received an official invitation to Azimio la Umoja Convention. As noted herein, the invitation was addressed in my personal capacity as ANC Party Leader and not OKA Principal. Regrettably, I will not be able to attend because of personal engagements,” said Musalia.

He added: “Raila Odinga is a worthy competitor, I wish him well because tomorrow will clearly be his day in the sun.”

Insiders say other OKA principals; Gideon Moi (Kanu), Moses Wetangula (Ford-Kenya) and Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka have also been invited to the convention.

“We have invited all OKA leaders to grace the event. We have also invited leaders of other friendly political parties outside OKA,” the anonymous source told the People Daily.

It is, however, unclear if Wetangula will be present after he claimed not to have been invited.

“I cannot attend an event which I have not been invited to.  I can only comment once I get the invitation,” he told the daily.

Nick Salat of Kanu confirmed his attendance saying that Raila attended the unveiling of a revamped Kanu.

“Raila came to our function, so it is only in order we attend his. We would be there to ensure the event is successful,” Salat said.

A total of 7,250 ODM delegates are expected to attend the convention. Gates will open at 3 am.
