Migori Speaker Boaz Okoth Arrested for Allegedly Breaking into Finance Office

Boaz Okoth, the Speaker of the Migori County Assembly, and seven other people have been arrested for allegedly breaking into the office of the County Assembly Chief Finance Officer.

Following the break-in, Mr Okoth and his associates are claimed to have seized a number of files and computers and moved them to his office.

At around 3 a.m., Migori County Police Commander Mark Wanjala said, they received a report claiming that the embattled county assembly speaker and his seven co-accused had broken into the finance office and were transporting papers to the speaker’s office.

Mr Wanjala stated that when the accused noticed police officers, they locked themselves in the speaker’s office until 8 a.m. on Wednesday, when they unlocked the office and were arrested.

A number of files and computers taken from the finance officer’s office were also recovered in the speaker’s office, confirmed the county police commander.

The eight were escorted to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations office in the county to record statements before being arraigned.

According to Mr Wanjala, investigations are ongoing to determine why the speaker and the other seven suspects broke into the county assembly’s main finance office.

The speaker is also facing graft charges in a case where numerous county officials are accused of stealing Ksh10 million from the County Assembly.

In December of last year, he was charged with graft along with 14 others.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) ordered the arrest of 15 county officials engaged in wrongdoing in November.

The individuals were being sought after, according to a letter from Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, on allegations of conspiracy to commit an offence.

“The suspects should be apprehended forthwith and arraigned on charges of conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption,” read the letter in part.

Apart from Okoth, the others included Mathews Chacha, acting assembly clerk Emmanuel King’wara, suspended clerk Tom Onyango, members of the Migori County Assembly Service Board Roland Asiga, Nicholas Rioba, Clifford Jobando and Mereza Akello as well as supply chain manager Steve Okello.
