Former Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has resigned as Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism to focus on politics.
The former police boss told reporters that he will vie for the Elgeyo Marakwet governor seat.
“Today’s assignment is the last because I am tendering my resignation to seek a leadership position in the county where I was born and brought up,” Boinnet said.
He added: “I am going for the seat of Governor Elgeyo Marakwet. I wanted to thank this committee personally for the work we have done together over time.”

Boinnet on Thursday thanked his boss, CS Najib Bala with whom he said he has worked closely with for the last couple of years.
“I am grateful to my boss CS Najib Balala with whom we have worked closely for a while. I have heeded to the call of my people to serve them as governor,” he said.
He will be seeking to succeed Alex Tolgos who is serving his second and final term.
Boinnet is the first state officer at the Cabinet level to make public his resignation ahead of the February 9 deadline.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in a notice issued by the Head of Public Service Joesph Kinyua, directed those with political ambitions to vacate their offices before February 8.
“Non-exempted State officers and all public officers are required to hand-over all public assets under their charge and to prepare comprehensive hand-over notes to facilitate a smooth transition and hand-over,” Kinyua said in the letter dated January 28.
While clearing, Cabinet Secretaries Chief Administrative Secretaries, Chairperson of Constitutional Commission, Principal Secretaries and Chairperson of State Cooperations are required to hand over assets to the Executive Office of the President.
CEOs of the constitutional commissions are to hand over to the Chairpersons of the constitutional commission.

CEOs of State corporations and state agencies should hand over to cabinet secretaries of the parent ministries with a copy to the board of the chairperson.
The rest of the public officers will hand over to their respective supervisors.
