Sonko Joins Kalonzo’s Wiper After Ditching Jubilee

Former Nairobi Governor Miko Sonko has officially moved to the Wiper party that is led by Kalonzo Musyoka.

Kalonzo commented on the move, saying that the party is growing by the day.

Sonko announced his resignation from the ruling Jubilee Party earlier this month.

Sonko thanked the party for standing with him during his tenure as the governor of Nairobi.

“Please accept this letter as my formal notice of resignation as a member of Jubilee Party effective March 10, 2022. This is in the exercise of my rights to belong to a political party of my choice as enshrined under the Constitution of Kenya,” his letter to the party read.

The former county boss was also welcomed to the fold by Wiper Chairman Chirau Ali Mwakwere, secretary-general Shakila Abdalla, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, and Embakasi South Mp Julius Mawathe.

Sonko was impeached in December 2020, with 88 MCAs voting in favor and only two voting against the censure motion.

He was charged with violations of the Constitution and other laws, as well as abuse of office, commission of crimes under national laws and lacking the mental capability to run the county government.

He has, however, in the recent past expressed his intention to reclaim his seat in August.

Sonko stated that he will be written off politically only if he is rejected by the people, not by a group of people who wish to write his political obituary.

The former senator stated that he will not give up his quest to have his impeachment overturned by the Supreme Court, and that he believes he will be vindicated.

“I will be moving to the Supreme Court by tomorrow (today) morning. My notice of appeal is even ready. The law is very clear – you have to exhaust all avenues of appeal. If I don’t proceed with the appeal, then it means I cannot vie,” he said.

“I was removed by the system, cartels and deep state and not rejected by the people. There are rumours all over but my resolve is to go back to the people and let them reject me or elect me back to my seat.”
