IEBC Summons Moses Kuria Over Election Rigging Allegations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria for claiming that they helped President Uhuru Kenyatta steal votes.

Kuria will appear before the IEBC’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee on March 30, said IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati in a statement on Saturday.

Chebukati doubles up as the commission’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee secretary.

“The commission is seized of a report and material against yourself in regard to violation of Clause 6 (a) and 6(i) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

“You are hereby required to attend to attend the offices of the commission at Anniversary Towers, Commission Boardroom 6th Floor on Wednesday the 30th day of March, 2022 at 10:00 o’clock,” Chebukati said.

Kuria made the allegations on March 15 in the Kasarani Gymnasium Arena during the United Democratic Alliance party delegates convention.

“Kuna wengine wanasema ati kura ya mlima itagawanywa; mheshimiwa Ann Waiguru, Rigathi Gachagua, Muthomi Njuki, Kimani Ichung’wa, Senator Linturi, Alice Wahome, Faith Gitau, Kimani wa Matangi…Sisi ndio tulikuwa tukishikilia Uhuru kura, na sisi ndio tulikuwa tunamuibia kura,” Kuria stated.

This translates to: “Some are saying the Mt Kenya vote will be divided. Hon Ann Waiguru, Rigathi Gachagua, Muthomi Njuki, Kimani Ichung’wa, Senator Linturi, Alice Wahome, Faith Gitau, Kimani wa Matangi…we are the people who guarded Uhuru’s votes, and we are the ones who stole the election.”

Following the backlash, the legislator explained that the claims were a slip of the tongue.

In a Facebook post, the Kiambu governor aspirant said he meant to say “tuliimba (sang)” and not “tuliiba (steal)”.

“Ben Githae is my witness. Tuliimbia Uhuru Ndani Ndani Ndaani mpaka akashinda,” he explained.
