Presidential Candidate Mwaure To Bring Back Pandora Papers, Demands For More Security

David Mwaure Waihiga, the presidential candidate of the Agano party, has warned Kenyans whose offshore accounts appeared in the leaked Pandora Papers that they must return the monies if he wins the election.

“I do not want to reveal that I will insist on how Nigeria treated its former President Sani Abacha by demanding that he returns all the billions he had stolen from his people … I do not want to scare anyone, but of course, they will have to bring back all that money,” he told Radio Taifa on Tuesday.

Mwaure said he would use his 35 years of legal experience in Kenya to direct the Attorney-General to issue a global alert requiring all banks to disclose the presence of accounts held by notable Kenyans in power.

“I am a member of the clergy and I come with no integrity blemish. I will demand that all the diplomats in the country help us get our looted money back to be pumped into our economy,” he said.

He added: “I’m seething with good anger at the turn of events in this country where high cost of living including foodstuffs, raw corruption … escalating national debt … we are neck deep into the mess. I want to rescue my motherland and people before they drown.”

According to the leaked report, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family is linked to 13 offshore accounts with a combined value of more than Sh3.3 billion.

The report did not reveal the source of the monies or accuse the account holders of any crime, and Kenyan law does not prohibit Kenyan citizens from having property or bank accounts outside the nation.

President Kenyatta, in reaction to the exposé, responded through State House spokesperson Kanze Dena: “These reports will go a long way in enhancing the financial transparency and openness that we require in Kenya and around the globe.”

He also cautioned Kenyans against voting for candidates who have spent “more than Sh50 billion” on their campaigns so far.

“Those characters will first reclaim their expenses from the national economy, hence prolonging our pain in experiencing the raw effects of corruption,” he explained.

He said he had set aside less than Sh10 million for his campaigns, which he stated will begin on July 4 once his manifesto is out on June 28.

“Do not be alarmed that I am yet to be experienced on the ground … Our campaign vehicles are getting their final touches at the workshop. I am coming and I will take it,” he said.

The presidential hopeful has also demanded for more security from the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai.

In a letter addressed to the National Police Service, the party said they want their presidential candidate to have more security because of their strategy to fight corruption.

“Our presidential candidate is even naming names. They are going for the big fish. Corruption fights back,” said Agano Party acting Secretary General Josiah Nyamu.

The party also questioned the policy guidelines in terms of providing security to presidential candidates and their running mates.

“Are these provided for in the law? If so, can we have them but not in the bravado we see with our competitors,” add the letter.
