Chebukati Slams Tuju, Rebel Commissioners Over Involvement in August Polls

The four rebel Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners have received criticism from Wafula Chebukati for their actions on and after August 15.

The four’s joint decision to have the Supreme Court throw out the results, according to Chebukati, was devastating.

The commissioners are; Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyang’aya, and Irene Masit.

“It is insincere for a member of the commission and senior staff to allege that they were barred from providing assistance to the election management process,” he said.

“It is even tragic that some members of the commission would petition the Supreme Court of Kenya to nullify the results that we collectively worked under difficult circumstances to deliver to the people of Kenya.”

He continued by saying it was regrettable that the commissioners had unjustly accused the personnel while under oath.

Innocent, industrious employees had been subjected to arbitrary detentions and arrests, intimidation and harassment by security organizations, and “political goons”, said Chebukati.

Raphael Tuju, the executive director of Azimio, was also reprimanded for his claim that Chebukati and commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu had visited him with ill intentions.

According to Chebukati, the commissioners only went to see Tuju following his accident in 2021.

“We were subjected to character assassination by Raphael Tuju who falsely tried to infer ill motive to a visit by the three of us when he was involved in a gruesome road accident that nearly claimed his life,” he said.

“He attempted to take advantage of a benevolent gesture of visiting him in 2021, on his own invitation, while recuperating from his injuries to achieve the malicious end of maligning our image before the public.”

In August, the former Jubilee secretary general claimed that Chebukati had arranged for a secret meeting in Karen.

“I want them to say they never came to my house I will take the CCTV to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)  incase they say they never came to my house,  because to my house they came,” Tuju said.

This was after the IEBC chair alleged that he (Tuju) had attempted to have the presidential vote moderated in favour of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga.
