Light Moment as Aisha Jumwa Refers to President Ruto as “Naibu wa Rais”

William Ruto has been president for a little over 60 days and some are yet to get used to his new title.

On Friday, Public Service and Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa referred to the head of state as “naibu” (deputy), before she quickly corrected herself.

The former Malindi MP said, “Mimi nataka nichukue nafasi hii kwanza kabisa nimshukuru Naibu wa…”

The head of state also burst into laughter.

The minister explained that she had worked with Dr Ruto for so long and was used to referring to him as the deputy president.

“Samahani, kunradhi, tumeishi naye kama naibu wa rais sana,” she said.

The former Kilifi gubernatorial candidate took the opportunity to thank the president for appointing her to serve in his government.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the president for electing me to be a minister in the Cabinet,” she said.

She added: “It is a great honour that he has given Coastal citizens an opportunity, even though I am not a coastal CS, I am the minister of Kenya, when I took the oath of office I swore to be the CS for the whole country.”

The president served as retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s deputy between 2013 and 2022.

The duo formed the Jubilee government in 2013 before their bitter fallout after they won their second term in office in 2017.

Dr Ruto and his former boss traded barbs especially after the latter joined forces with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga.
