Azimio MPs Claim Kenya Kwanza Leaders Plotting to Buy State-owned Firms

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party lawmakers claim that senior Kenya Kwanza leaders are lining up to buy state firms that are rumored to be for sale.

The opposition legislators led by National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi asserted that individuals responsible for the sinister plot had agreements in place with foreign nations.

According to the Ugunja MP, the government officials are eyeing the ports in Mombasa and Lamu, among others.

“We repeat that the proposed sale of parastatals is not meant to revive the institutions. It is meant to help people in Kenya Kwanza who have formed companies in Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe,” said Wandayi.

Opiyo declared the plan to privatize state-owned firms without consulting Parliament to be suspicious and vowed to fight it.

The lawmakers also named a number of hotels as being up for sale, including Bomas of Kenya. They noted that they will fight any legislation that the Cabinet approves facilitating the sale.

“Law change will give National Treasury unchecked power to sell institutions,” they said.

“There is no way Ruto is going to convince Kenyans that he is acting in the best interest of the nation by selling assets without involving representatives of the people in Parliament.”

They maintained that Azimio opposes the Privatization Bill 2023 citing their opposition to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s attempt to sell sugar companies without following the proper procedures.

The Cabinet on Tuesday adopted the Privatization Bill which allows the National Treasury to sell state firms without Parliament’s approval.
