Gov’t to Ruthlessly Deal with Mungiki – DP Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to ruthlessly deal with outlawed groups such as the Mungiki sect.

The DP was responding to the concerns of Mt Kenya leaders on the resurgence of the groups.

More than 20 lawmakers who spoke on Sunday said they were worried about the groups as they could hinder economic development.

But the DP assured the people that such groups will be dealt with.

“We have heard your fears and concerns about the revival of this criminal gang. The government will not allow it. Any attempt to recreate their activities will be met with the full force of the law,” said Gachagua.

“There is no way this criminal gang will be allowed to operate anywhere in this country. We are fully aware of the history of their heinous acts where they murdered, raped or circumcised women and extorted money from the public.”

He also took on former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga for taking advantage of the members and using them to enrich himself.

“It is a few people taking advantage of jobless young people. I am asking parents to talk to their children,” said Gachagua.

Further, he claimed the revival of the group was meant to intimidate the government.

“If you have a problem with President Ruto or me, why can’t you face us? Why use children of the poor?” he posed.

“We are not scared of anyone who wants to use illegal gang to intimidate us. If they want to try it, no problem, but I’m telling parents to warn their children against the move.”

This comes days after Njenga was grilled by the DCI leading to a standoff between cops and his supporters.
