I Used to Drink Before I Encountered Jesus – DP Gachagua

On Monday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua acknowledged that he had not always abstained from drinking and had once engaged in alcohol abuse.

However, the DP said that since encountering “Jesus Christ,” he has given up drinking.

“The President, [Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure] Kindiki, and the rest of us, none has a problem with alcohol. I must admit I used to drink a lot before I got saved,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua, who is in charge of the government’s campaign against illegal brews, claimed that since giving up alcohol, his life has improved.

Gachagua urged alcoholics to accept the challenge and stop using the drug.

“That is how I am deputy president. I invite those who drink to consider dropping it and maybe things will get better,” he said.

He also warned government officials against supporting the vice through corruption.

“We are very happy with police officers who are doing a very good job but we have a serious problem with a few of them who have a conflict of interest and have opened bars in the areas where they serve. We have a problem with a few officers who are collecting protection fees; police officers who are supposed to arrest drunkards but they are more drunk,” he added.

He issued a warning to dishonest businesses who produce illegal booze in filthy distilleries, package it, and sell it as recognized brands, saying the government will not hesitate to prosecute them.

“None of us has a problem with alcohol, but we have a problem with poison in the name of alcohol,” he said.

According to the DP, the brewers have been bringing ethanol from neighbouring Tanzania.
