Apologize! Raila Tells CS Moses Kuria Over GMO Remarks

ODM Party  leader Raila Odinga wants Trade and Industrialization CS Moses Kuria to apologize over remarks he made on Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) foods.

Speaking on Thursday, the former Gatundu South MP said there is nothing wrong adding GMO foods TO the list of things that kill Kenyans.

His remarks sparked controversy on social media.

“Being in this country you are a candidate for death and because there are many things competing for death in this country, there is nothing wrong with adding GMOs to that list,” Kuria said.

“That is why we have deliberately decided to allow GMOs in this country until we are satisfied that we have enough maize in this country.”

But according to the former prime minister, the minister’s sentiments were a mockery to the people of Kenya.

“To say that even without GMOs, Kenyans will die anyway is a mockery to the people of Kenya. @RailaOdinga therefore says Kuria should apologize to the people of Kenya,” reads a tweet by ODM.

The ODM leader also stated that he is against the planned importation of GMO maize by President William Ruto’s administration.

Raila wants members of parliament to tale action and halt the importation.

“PL @RailaOdinga opposes the planned importation of GMO maize by the Ruto administration. He says, GMO’s are dangerous to both human and animals lives and that they have been banned in major European countries and Americas. Parliament should take the lead on this matter, he says,” adds ODM.

The CS said the government intends to import GMO and non-GMO maize for the next six months.

“In view of the food situation in the country, I shall be signing instruments to allow duty free imports of GMO and non-GMO Maize for the next 6 months,” Kuria said.

While okaying the use of GMO foods in October, President Ruto said he considered a lot of factors including opinions from experts and technical reports on the adoption of biotechnology.
