Azimio Leaders Call for IG Koome’s Resignation

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome is under immense pressure as the opposition calls for his resignation in response to comments made about hired corpses.

Furious opposition leaders continued to mount pressure on the IG, denouncing his comments as disrespectful at a time when families are coming to terms with the loss of loved ones shot by police officers.

On Tuesday, Koome refuted claims of deaths made by the opposition during the demonstrations, claiming that politicians had hired bodies from morgues to malign the police.

“It is so unfortunate that some senior members of the society go to the mortuary hiring dead bodies, calling the media and telling them that these people were killed by the police. How low can some of our leaders sink?” Koome posed.

Speaking at the funeral service for the victims of police violence in Bondo, Siaya county, Azimio leaders called for Koome to be removed from office, claiming he is unsuitable to retain that position.

The ceremony, which was attended by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, and Azimio leader Raila Odinga, denounced police abuse and encouraged the international community to pay attention to the events happening in Kenya.

Kalonzo on his part declared that the IG was unsuitable to hold office.

“The only way he can get away with this is to resign. Even if he resigns, it is not enough. We have been in demonstrations before, but this time it was a war not tear gas. They wanted to finish our people and Raila Odinga,” he claimed.

“My advice today, if there is rule of law in Kenya then the President can also sack him.”

Raila referred to the brutality meted on demonstrators, particularly in Nyanza, as ethnic profiling.

The Azimio leader asked the global community to “come out strongly” while cautioning the government against adopting the same Hitler techniques to profile a community.

“We want the international community to take note of this. This is unacceptable, we want the diplomatic community in Nairobi not to keep quiet but stand with Kenyans,” he said.

“I have lived long in Germany when Hitler targeted the Jews, he came with the final solution and started to attack and kill the Jews the problem started this way.”
