Azimio Senators Storm Out of Chambers in Protest of CS Kuria’s Appearance

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party senators on Wednesday stormed out of plenary after Speaker Amason Kingi allowed Trade CS Moses Kuria to answer queries.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said the CS who has been attacking the Nation Media Group since Sunday, would use the time to “cleanse himself”.

“Moses Kuria will use the privilege of appearing before the Senate to cleanse himself…” said Sifuna as his colleagues walked out of the chambers.

Meanwhile, Sifuna says he has filed a censure motion against the CS saying his fitness to hold office was questionable.

“I have filed a motion at the Senate to discuss Moses Kuria’s conduct because the constitution, which guarantees media freedom, must be upheld. A person in such a capacity should not be allowed to make such remarks which can’t be made even before children,” he told Radio Citizen.

“Journalists don’t cook up things, all they do is report what has happened. It is sad his bosses are staying quiet amidst all this. It might as well be seen as a sign that this is what this government stands for.”

Speaker Kingi while allowing Kuria to respond to queries claimed he had not seen the said motion.

“Having not seen the proposed motion by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, it cannot be a subject of discussion on the floor of the House today. Even assuming that the proposed motion was submitted to the Office of the Speaker, it may have been admissible or not. So what we are doing is we’re anticipating debates, contrary to Standing Order 99,” Kingi stated.

The opposition allied lawmakers also argued that the house lacked quorum contrary to Standing Order number 41.

As a result, they said, the House would be unable to transact business.
