Azimio to Challenge Speaker Wetangula’s Majority Ruling – Kalonzo

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka says the recent proclamation of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance as the majority party in the National Assembly will be challenged by the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday at the Serena Hotel, Kalonzo, a member of the Azimio coalition, declared that the Raila Odinga-led camp would petition the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula’s decision in court.

He referred to Wetangula’s decision about the House leadership as incorrect and unlawful.

“We (Azimio) are going to court, to go against the ruling of my friend Weta. He is still my friend even if he occasioned disharmony in the country. He knows it. We are ruling against those things, we don’t do that because future generations will look up to you,” Kalonzo said.

The former vice president referred to the National Assembly speaker as a “close ally” as he further urged him not to succumb to “bad influence of power.”

As a result, the former vice president asked Wetangula to follow in the footsteps of maintaining justice by citing the administration of late President Mwai Kibaki, during which time former Speaker Kenneth Marende decided against the government in a particular case.

“Today, Marende is a household name… We used to say Solomonic wisdom… because of a ruling he made which affected me as a leader of government business, but we were to abide,” he explained.

“So ndugu Weta, please, don’t accept manipulation you are my brother and we were teargassed together. Don’t forget your brother who is still in the trenches. We must stand for what is truthful and just in this country.”

Last week, the former Bungoma Senator ruled that the President William Ruto-led outfit had marshalled more MPs in the House compared to those from Azimio.

Wetangula noted that coalitions are not “cast in stone”, and that the membership can change before or after elections.

This was in reference to parties that ditched Azimio for Kenya Kwanza after the August 9 general elections.

“Coalitions are not cast in stone and are an evolving arrangement which can occur both prior to and after the elections,” said the Speaker.

The speaker stated that after the 2022 post-election agreements were signed, Kenya Kwanza increased its MP membership to 179, surpassing Azimio la Umoja’s 157.

Prior to that, he noted that Kenya Kwanza had 165 MPs, while Azimio la Umoja had 171.

After the elections, some 14 MPs who belonged to parties allied to Azimio la Umoja switched their allegiance to Kenya Kwanza, he added.

The speaker added that it was challenging for him to confirm the accuracy of the information because the Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu filed her reply regarding coalition membership relatively late.

“The Registrar [of Political Parties] submitted documents sought by the Clerk of the National Assembly, including coalition agreements, more than six weeks after the request was made,” said Wetangula.

Some of the political parties that cut ties with Azimio la Umoja are Maendeleo Chap Chap (MCC), Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG).

“These parties have filed constitutional petitions and objections in regard to their membership of Azimio la Umoja,” he continued.

Wetangula said, if aggrieved by the ruling, members of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition can seek legal redress.
