Nairobi Speaker Benson Mutura Summoned By DCI Over Alleged Theft

Nairobi County Speaker Benson Mutura was on Wednesday summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices over alleged theft.

He is scheduled to appear at their offices this afternoon to address allegations.

“I am conducting investigation into an alleged …stealing by servant. I have reasons to believe that you, Benson Mutura is connected to the offence or has information that may assist in the investigations,” the summon read in part.

Mutura told journalists that police had tried to arrest him in his office earlier in the day.

He called the attempted arrest a witch hunt since he had expressed his support for Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential campaign.

“This morning while I was in the office, some officer came to arrest me without a summon and reason. What they did was in total contravention of the Nairobi County standing orders,” he said.

Mutura told reporters that the officers uncuffed him after he protested against the arrest.

“I am ready to obey the summons. I have been diligent in what I have been doing,” he added.

Speaker Mutura joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party earlier this month. Then, he said, he will not run for elective office but work for the party.

“I’m not contesting for any political seat. I will perform tasks and duties assigned by the  UDA party,” he said.

He first served as a Kimathi Ward councillor before being elected Makadara MP on a TNA ticket in the 2013 polls.

In 2017, he was defeated by ODM’s George Aladwa for the seat.

Mutura was elected as the third speaker of the county assembly on August 14, 2020, following Beatrice Elachi’s resignation.
