Cate Waruguru Among Ruto Allies Set to Lose House Positions In Fresh Purge

In an impending purge, several Members of Parliament close to Deputy President William Ruto risk losing their seats on crucial House Committees.

Jubilee parliamentarians who have pledged support for Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have been singled out.

The party has already started disciplinary processes against MPs viewed as rebels, in an effort to shrink the country’s second in command ahead of the August elections.

Cate Waruguru, fiery Laikipia Woman Representative who now serves as the vice-chairperson of the National Assembly’s Agriculture committee, is among the politicians.

Others are Khatib Mwashetani, Lunga Lunga MP and vice-chairman of the Lands Committee, and Moses Lessonet (Eldama Ravine), who chairs the Budget and Appropriations Committee.

Bura MP Ali Wario, who chairs the National Assembly’s Regional Integration Committee, as well as Japhet Kareke Mbiuki (Environment and Natural Resources), William Kipkemoi Kisang (ICT Committee), Katoo Ole Metito Judah (Defense and Foreign Relations), and David Gikaria (Energy) are among those targeted.

Some of the above-mentioned legislators were given seven days to respond to show-cause letters before being fired.

“Pursuant to Standing Orders 176 (1) and 176 (2) you are hereby notified that the Jubilee Party which nominated you intents to discharge you from the Departmental Committee on Agriculture and Livestock You are hereby given seven (7) days to respond before you are discharged from the said committee,” said Majority Whip Emmanuel Wangwe in letters to the above mentioned lawmakers.

According to a local daily, there are plans to move some the DP’s allies to less influential committees.

Last year, a number of senators and MPs were stripped of their roles in Parliament.

They included Senators Kipchumba Murkomen (Majority Leader), Susan Kihika (Majority Whip) and more recently Garissa Township MP Aden Duale.

They were all replaced by legislators loyal to handshake partners; President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
