Chebukati Wants Evidence Linking Him, Wetangula To Ballot Printing Tender Presented

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati has dared anyone to present any proof connecting him to Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula about the purported ballots fraud.

On Wednesday evening, Chebukati spoke to reporters and defended the electoral agency, claiming everything was legal.

“IEBC is independent and only accountable to the Constitution, not to any other person or body. We cannot allow other forces to intervene and direct our actions,” he said.

He added that continuing public profiling has made the workers of the agency afraid.

Chebukati refuted allegations that he met with Wetangula repeatedly to push and influence the open tendering procedure for the ballot papers to Inform Lykos.

“It’s very unfortunate and for those making those remarks, he is a bukusu like me and we were born in Bungoma that’s the reason perhaps for profiling. I have never sat with an individual to discuss procurement,” he said.

He added: “It’s very unfortunate that some leaders can stoop so low to try at this point time to malign the character of the chair. I want to tell the commission to focus on talking to the electorate on issues.”

Last week, the secretary-general of the Azimio coalition and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed made the astonishing assertion that a meeting was conducted in Karen to discuss the tender for the ballot papers.

According to Junet, a deal was brokered at the said meeting to award the contract to print 200 million ballots to the Greek company.

“We know that you held meetings severally in Karen with the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati. You can go to court if you want. We know every detail of those meetings,” Junet said.

Junet claimed that representatives of the Greek company visited Kenya while pretending to be prospective investors in Bungoma County.

“When IEBC announced ballot papers tender you sent someone called Makokha Abdalla to Greece and you invited those guys from Greece to Kenya pretending to be people wanting to invest in Bungoma. They had come for a deal with you,” he said.

The senator was a major actor in the agreement, according to Junet, who even dared him to fight him in court.

In order to enable what he called “the Rigging plot,” he claimed that the agreement reached during the meeting would lead to marked ballot papers being smuggled in across the border of Uganda.

“We want IEBC to conduct a free, fair and transparent election,” Junet said.

“This is not a matter that can be taken lightly. A ballot paper is very critical instrument in this election.”

The Suna East MP said they are watching closely the plot and will soon unmask those involved in the “rigging plot”.

In a quick rejoinder, Wetangula dismissed the claims as false and denied dealing with both the IEBC and the Greek ballot printer.

He asked the Raila Odinga-led outfit to avoid linking him to their pre-election woes.

“ODM must keep me out of their election woes and come to the reality that they are once again starring at a disastrous election outing,” Wetangula said.
