CS Mutua Asks US Envoy Whitman To Disregard Raila’s Recall Threats

The government says it fully supports US Ambassador Meg Whitman, who has been under fire from the opposition over remarks on the 2022 polls.

Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua has backed the envoy by urging her to disregard threats, which follow the call-to-recall threat made by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

“We value our development partners and members of the Diplomatic corps should not feel threatened or intimidated by unwarranted threats,” said Mutua.

The CS reminded the former prime minister that only he (Mutua) has the power to recall an ambassador.

“If Kenya has a problem with any diplomat or country, it is the work of the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs to summon and seek clarification,” he said.

Kenya, Mutua said, appreciates the envoy’s candid and straightforward remarks on the progress made thus far.

“She stated facts and paid tribute to the democratic way our constitutional institutions oversaw a credible electoral process that has set Kenya on a transformative path,” he continued.

According to Mutua, Whitman’s message was in line with the Kenya Kwanza economic empowerment plan.

He stated that the envoy has acknowledged Kenya’s potential and trajectory and her remarks do not call for any sort of punishment.

In her opening remarks during the devolution conference in Eldoret on Wednesday, Whitman asserted that the 2022 polls were the most credible Kenya has ever held.

“I arrived in Kenya days before the general election, and what I witnessed was short of remarkable,” she said.
