George Wainaina Replaces Nick Salat as KANU Secretary General

Independence party Kanu has replaced former Secretary General Nick Salat with National Executive Director Mr George Wainaina.

The Kanu National Executive Council (NEC) approved Mr Salat’s successor on Thursday and proposed Mr Job Waka to fill Mr Wainaina’s post.

Following his expulsion from the party due to misconduct claims, the former Bomet East MP switched allegiance to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Following the NEC meeting, Kanu National Chairman Gideon Moi also named Mr Ibrahim Sheikh as the party’s first national vice-chairman and Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda as the second national vice-chairperson.

“For the position of the Kanu Women Congress National Chairperson, I hereby nominate Hon. Gladwel Tungo and for the position of the Secretary for Health, I hereby nominate Mr Mohammed Bashir Dahir,” said Mr Moi.

The former Baringo senator noted that the nominations are on an interim basis pending party elections.

“The individuals I am nominating today are best fit to fill the aforementioned positions and steer the party to the next level,” he said.

“My convictions are based on the fact that they bring a reservoir of political experience with extensive knowledge and expertise in the running and management of political affairs and institutions.”

Mr Moi also announced the start of a 90-day nationwide Kanu membership recruitment drive, which will be led by the current branch officials. The exercise will kick off on March 15.

“Thereafter, the party shall begin its elections in line with the set guidelines. It is my belief that the said officials are fully compliant as paid-up members of the party in accordance with the party constitution, and membership policy,” Mr Moi said.
