Governor Kiraitu’s Party Denies Plagiarizing UDA Colours to Confuse Voters

Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi’s Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) has denied plagiarizing colours associated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

UDA which is linked to deputy President William Ruto, claimed DEP has copied its colours so as to confuse voters.

Responding to UDA’s allegations, DEP’s chairman Mugambi Imanyara, said the party’s symbol is a bus and its colours are green, black and gold.

He noted that the UDA party symbol is a wheelbarrow while theirs is a bus.

“I believe that UDA is complaining about our use of colour so that when they look at yellow they think it is gold,” Imanyara said.

He opined that there is no way the electorate will confuse the two symbols.

“Their symbol is a wheelbarrow, ours is a bus, there is no way someone can confuse those two symbols. We have no intention whatsoever of causing confusion by use of the colours,” Imanyara added.

Political Parties Registrar Anne Nderitu said that what matters most is how political parties use dominant colours to brand themselves.

“Any party can pick a colour and use it but it’s how you brand those colours that makes it unique,” Nderitu said.

Nderitu further pointed out that no political party can claim a colour as its own.

The DP and Kiraitu have in the recent past been feuding after the former accused the latter of imposing a Raila Odinga presidency on the people.

“We are telling Kiraitu to stop acting like a political broker because people of Meru are not fools to be pushed to elect a presidential candidate, who wants to inherit a government that he did not make or form,” said the DP.

Hitting back at the DP, the county boss noted that he (Ruto) was angry because Mt Kenya governors had declined to back his presidential bid.

“Since when did he own Meru? He is just a visitor. It is like someone going to climb a mountain then later claims to be owning it. We were also elected by the people to whom we listen. It is wrong to abuse others yet you are seeking their support,” said Kiraitu.

“You have seen there are no governors in his entourage, just some members of parliament. He has identified us as so class of people who are against his interests. Since we are his opponents, he can’t have kind words for us. Even as we disagree, we expect some decency. I went to Harvard Law School, I would not have gone there if I was foolish,” he added.
