Governor Wa Iria Protests Removal From List Of Presidential Candidates

There was drama at the Bomas of Kenya on Sunday evening as Usawa Kwa Wote presidential candidate Mwangi wa Iria protested his name being removed from the nomination register.

In a video seen by this writer, Murang’a Governor who is seeking the presidency questioned why his name had been deleted from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) register yet he submitted all the necessary prerequisites.

“Even people who failed to meet requirements are in the schedule but my name has been removed… no election will be conducted if I will not contest,” he complained.

Wa Iria asserted that he had fulfilled all of the procedures, including obtaining signatures from supporters in 24 counties, as is required, and that the commission had recognized receipt of his signatures.

“We cannot start rigging that far… They have deliberately removed my name today.”

As a result IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati chaired a crisis meeting at Bomas in response to his protest.

Governor Wa Iria is scheduled to meet with Chebukati to discuss the absence of his name from the presidential nomination registration on Monday.

The meeting will take place at the Bomas.

The presidential candidate has requested that all of his followers attend the meeting.

“All H.E Mwangi Wa Iria Supporters and Usawa Party Aspirants are directed to be at Bomas of Kenya tomorrow at 0900Hrs to accompany him to meet IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati and later international press conference,” reads an alert sent out by the party.

On Wednesday last week, 11 independent candidates presented their papers to the electoral agency ahead of a sifting process that kicks off this week.

Out of the 38, only 11 beat the deadline for signatures and 48,000 copies of IDs from their supporters from at least 24 counties.

The 11 include Reuben Kigame, James Kamau, Gibson Ng’ang’a, Dorothy Kemunto and Peter Mumbiko.

Others are Dancan Oduor, Erastus Masira, Jeremia Nyaga, Faith Ngige and Muthiora Kariara and June Nyakwar.

Deputy president William Ruto (UDA), Raila Odinga (Azimio la Umoja), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Maina Wanjigi (Safina) and Roots Party flagbearer George Wajackoyah have also submitted their papers.

Njeru Kathangu (Ford Asili), Justus Juma (JFPK) and Mwangi wa Iria (Usawa Kwa Wote) are reported to have presented their documents on Wednesday.

Other requirements which the aspirants were expected to submit by Wednesday are dully filled Form 12, self-declaration form and Sh200,000 nomination fee.

Women and Persons with Disabilities were required to pay Sh100,000.
