How Retired President Mwai Kibaki Spent Last Days

Retired President Mwai Kibaki died on Friday at the age of 90.

President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement from State House.

Since his retirement in 2013, the former head of state has led a rather private life.

In the last nine years there have been reports of his hospitalisation.

Sources have intimated that Kenya’s third President was in and out of Nairobi Hospital for the last couple of days.

Apart from blood pressure, Kibaki was also battling the consequences of the 2002 road accident.

Kibaki’s condition had deteriorated in the last few days. He was rushed to the hospital on Thursday morning.

It was his last journey alive. He was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Nairobi Hospital. He died 24 hours later.

“He had been unwell, for upwards of two weeks. All the while he was fighting it all well. Up until yesterday (Thursday), he was conversing albeit with difficulties,” the source told the Standard.

“It had been an ongoing thing, and even this one we thought he was going to beat it his way,” the source added.

His son, Jimmy Kibaki, was in town for a meeting when he breathed his last.

Sources stated that Jimmy walked out of the meeting without saying a word.

The family, it is said, had been prepared for the eventuality. They spent time with the retired President and constantly checked in on him.

Kibaki will be laid to rest in his home county of Nyeri, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i said on Saturday.

He will be buried in Othaya on April 30 but before then there will be a funeral service at the Nyayo Stadium on Thursday.

His body will also lie in state from Monday to Wednesday at Parliament building.
