Jaswant Rai’s Associate and Victoria Commercial Bank CEO Yogesh Pattni Grilled by DCI

Victoria Commercial Bank CEO Yogesh Pattni was on Monday grilled by detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit over his role in international company, Vortex Resources Limited purchase the debts owed by Mumias Sugar Company and an ongoing insolvency case.

Those privy to the details say Pattni was also questioned over his links with billionaire Jaswant Rai.

He was taken from his office at the Two Rivers mall.

Sources indicate that he and Rai had each received an anticipatory bail from Commercial Court weeks prior to the arrest.

According to court records, the duo and other parties were involved in a case of legal process abuse and criminalization of West Kenya Sugar Company Limited’s involvement in the insolvency proceedings.

Last month, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Inspector General of Police were all forbidden by the courts from summoning, interrogating, or detaining Rai.

Rai was kidnapped by unidentified people in broad daylight three days ago, and it is unclear why he was freed the next day. According to police, he was not in their custody.

On Sunday, President William Ruto issued a stern warning to some of the key figures in the sugar business during a church service in Bungoma County.

He issued another warning on Monday. He said: “Kuna macartel wako pale sijui huyu anapeleka huyu kortini, sijui mwingine anasema alinunua nini mimi nimewaambia hao watu wote hakuna mtu ako na kitu hapo hao wakora wote watoke, hiyo kampuni ni ya wananchi na tutapangia upya hakuna kesi tuta entertainment, kesi watoe na wao wenyewe watoke na nimewaambia mambo ni matatu wakitaka kuniletea kisirani either wahame Kenya, ama nitawaweka jela ama wasafiri waende mbinguni jameni wametusumbua sana hapa Mumias.”
