Kenya Rewards Political Thieves – Ekuru Aukot

The majority of financial schemes are orchestrated by high ranking government officials who get away with stealing public monies, lawyer Ekuru Aukot has said.

The Thirdway Alliance party leader said that corrupt political figures in Kenya receive rewards rather than punishment.

“Some of these financial schemes are actually owned by individuals in high political powers…that actually exploit the poor,” he said.

“We are not punishing thieves of public money we keep on rewarding them look at for example the chief administrative secretaries that ah …this administration is defending, these are failed politicians some of them with many many case.”

The former Presidential candidate said that Kenya is not devoted to addressing the issue of corrupt officials, unlike Singapore which handled graft with more seriousness.

He implied that Kenya is reverting to the era when structural adjustment plans were being carried out.

According to Aukot, the executive branch of government has failed to implement policies that have a national impact and has instead propagated this failure to other branches of government, such as the legislature.

“What is actually failing this country is the executive arm of government but now it has also grown into the legislature,” said Aukot.

“I don’t see the legislators anymore actually calling the government to account, properly represent the people who gave them that mandate, the representation in Kenya has become so hopeless to be honest,” he added.

He continued by saying that criticizing the system was pointless because it was the corrupt system’s representatives who should be held accountable.
