Kiraitu Bags Job Days After Losing Meru Governorship

Kiraitu Murungi, the outgoing governor of Meru, was inaugurated in as a member of the Kenya Law Reform Commission (KLRC) a few days after Kawira Mwangaza, the outgoing woman representative, defeated him in the contest for governor.

Kiraitu was sworn in this morning by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

“It is true I have been appointed a commissioner at the KLRC and will take up the role immediately,” the outgoing county chief told the Nation.

Mwangaza garnered 209,148 votes against her closest rival Senator Mithika Linturi of UDA who polled 183,859 votes.

The first time governor came in last with 110,814 votes.

He lost partly due to his association with Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga. The area was predominantly a UDA zone.

Kiraitu was a candidate for the Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP), while Ms Mwangaza vied as an independent candidate.

The question of who will become the new political kingpin in Meru county has come into focus following Kiraitu’s departure from the political scene.

Julius Taitumu defeated the other prominent politician, Igembe North MP Maoka Maore (Jubilee). Kathuri Murungi, the outgoing Imenti South MP, won the election for senator on August 9.

Apart from Peter Munya, the cabinet secretary for agriculture, and Mpuru Aburi, the upcoming member of parliament for Tigania East and a close ally of Mr Munya, Kiraitu and Mr Maore have been the main politicians in the area.

The spotlight will now switch to Ms Mwangaza and Mr Kathuri, who, according to experts, are the new political power brokers in Meru.
