Former Laikipia MP Matthew Lempurkel has been sentenced to one year imprisonment for assaulting MP Sarah Korere in 2016.
Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Onkwani on Friday found the former lawmaker guilty of assault and sentenced him to one year with no alternative to fine.
“The court has considered that there are many issues of violence in the country and also fact that the accused is a first offender,” she said.
“I note from the mitigation record that accused is a leader who needs to be a good example to others so I proceed to sentence the accused person serve one year imprisonment.”
Lempurkel has a right to appeal the ruling within 14 days.
He is said to have slapped Ms Korere in November 2016 at Harambee House, Nairobi.
The charge sheet showed that he hit her on the left cheek and kicked her on the lower abdomen causing her bodily harm.
He had earlier claimed to have been the victim, not Korere. He allegedly suffered a bout of dizziness and was taken to Karen Hospital.
It was after he reported the matter at Parliament Police Station that he was arrested.
