Meru MCAs Resume Impeachment Process Against Governor Kawira

Governor Kawira Mwangaza is the subject of a new impeachment attempt by Meru MCAs.

The Ward Representatives want her out over the appointment of her husband, Murega Baichu, to the county office, alleged egregious wrongdoing, and improper firing of county officers.

Baichu was named as the patron of the Meru Youth Service.

The MCAs assert that she did not hold a fair and competitive hiring procedure.

Additionally, they have accused her of inciting an unlawful riot and forcefully gaining entrance into the county assembly.

This comes days after a Meru court blocked an impeachment motion against her.

Justice Wamae Cherere ruled that the motion did not follow the correct procedure.

“I’m guided by the principle that a party, such as a petitioner, is not required to suffer illegality or breach of her rights and resultant injustice on the solace that her grievance would be remedy either by the Assembly or the Senate,” she said.

She added: “Upon considering the application and preliminary objection and after hearing the presentations of the council, this court finds that the procedure adopted by the respondent to process the proposed motion of impeachment is flawed and has the effect of violating her constitutional rights.”

Addressing residents after the court ruling, the former Woman Rep led the crowd in saying sorry 70 times representing every member of the county assembly.

While 68 out of 69 MCAs were after her ouster, she said she was apologising to all including the speaker.

But Speaker Ayub Bundi vowed to resume the impeachment process once a petition filed in court is concluded.

“We have an obligation to respect the orders of the court as it has already pronounced itself, and the assembly will abide by the orders therein,” he said.

He said the motion would proceed once the court battle is over.
