Move On – Prof Mutua Tells Kalonzo Over 2017 Polls Pact with Raila

Move on, legal scholar Prof Makau Mutua has told Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka over 2017 election pact with ODM’s Raila Odinga.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Tuesday night, the US-based scholar urged Kalonzo to abandon his presidential ambitions and support Raila’s for the third time.

“I think he, metaphorically, exploded a bomb by saying what he said. I understand his politics, it’s the silly season…but I would like him to say bygones are bygones and let us talk about how we move forward,” said the scholar.

This will be Raila’s fifth stab at the presidency.

Kalonzo on the same day laid bare an election pact which he insists the former prime minister should honour.

The former vice president told the press that Prof Mutua was the witness during the signing of the agreement.

But Mutua could neither confirm nor deny the existence of the said pact.

“I cannot confirm or deny the existence of any agreement that I may or may not have been a part of. NASA is a defunct political formation, it is no longer in existence, so when I was looking at the agreement I thought it must have died with the death of NASA, that is how legal agreements work,” he said.

According to the document, a pre-election agreement was signed on April 30, 2017 detailing how Kalonzo and Raila would join forces to face the Jubilee duo of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.

The two-page agreement also listed how the former premier would back Kalonzo’s presidential bid in August 2022.

“By accepting nomination of ODM to run as president for the fifth time, I believe my brother Raila Odinga has committed an irreparable material breach of this agreement,” said Kalonzo.

Mutua also stated that he and Raila have been trying to have a sit down with the Wiper leader but he has been “playing hard to get”.

“I will not call him a liar, I will say he was economical with the truth, because I have been trying to get him to the table to speak to us. Mr. Odinga has been willing to speak with Mr. Musyoka without conditions…it is Mr. Musyoka who has been very coy and playing hard to get,” Prof Mutua asserted.

Admitting that he (Kalonzo) is a key political player in the country, Prof Mutua did however note that Raila can still win the election without him.

“In politics no one is indispensable, and Mr. Musyoka will agree with that, but he is a vital member of the Kenya politic, and the community he comes from he has support and even from other parts of the country…we want him to join us, we want to win with him, we don’t want to win without him. I don’t think that we will lose the election without him, but I don’t think that we want to even imagine that possibility.”
