MP Kajwang Questions Wetangula’s Eligibility To Run for Speaker of National Assembly

Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang has questioned Moses Wetangula’s legitimacy to run for speaker of the National Assembly.

After being sworn in earlier today, MPs are currently in Parliament to vote for their preferred Speaker.

According to Kajwang’, Wetang’ula did not resign from his job as Bungoma Senator before running for the position.

“The speaker to who he allegedly delivered his resignation letter is already a governor, the constitution says term expires at the date of the general election,” he said.

“I ask you returning officer to find that Moses Wetangula is not eligible to be a candidate for the speaker of this house.”

But according to Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungw’ah, the former Bungoma senator resigned two days after the gazettement of senators-elect.

“There is a letter, Moses Wetang’ula resigned two days after the gazettement of Senators, Kajwang’s allegations are hot air and opaque,” said the legislator.

“It is preposterous for TJ Kajwang to make an allegation that he cannot substantiate by way of tabling a copy of the letter that he purports that Wetangula resigned on 9th August. What TJ is purporting can be equated to what they said was opaque, hot air…” he added.

Also coming to Wetangula’s defense was Garissa Township MP Aden Duale who argued that a senator-elect is not a state officer.

Wetangula is facing former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende for the position.

Marende has been fronted by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance which has claimed to have the majority number of lawmakers.

Wetangula is Kenya Kwanza’s candidate, a side led by President-elect William Ruto.
