MPs Collect Signatures in Attempt to Impeach Trade CS Moses Kuria

MPs from maize-growing regions have started gathering signatures to start the process of removing Moses Kuria as the Trade Cabinet Secretary for permitting its importation.

The legislators threatened to oust the former Gatundu South MP following the declaration that he would be publishing a gazette notice to permit the importation of duty-free maize last week.

In an effort to protect farmers’ incomes, the State intends to purchase 10 million bags of GM maize.

According to Mr Kuria’s announcement, the government will permit the importation of GM maize for a period of six months.

The MPs have resolved to begin the process of removing the newly appointed minister before their holiday break.

Meanwhile, Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua says the planned importation of maize is a “get rich quick” scheme for a few individuals.

The importation, she maintained, is unnecessary and will have negative effects on local farmers who are preparing to harvest their produce.

“Maize, Maize, Maize. Source of daily meal for a majority of Kenyans. To wheeler dealers a get-rich-quick medium, imported often needlessly at the expense of the local farmer,” she tweeted.

“Ships docking with consignment of Maize before rules of importation are known and when local farmers are harvesting,” she added.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party running mate in the August 9 polls also revived the maize scandal that took place in 2009.

Then, President William Ruto was the minister for Agriculture in the Grand Coalition Government led by late President Mwai Kibaki and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Karua also asserted that if the importation of maize continues on its current course, there will be another scandal.

“In the grand coalition government as agriculture minister William Ruto was associated with Maize scandal. We are now set for season two of the Maize scandal,” she said.

Karua referred to the approval of GMO products to enter the country as “illegitimate” and “no more than a roadside declaration.”
