Opposition Free to Hold Rally, Not Protests – Police

Police have given the opposition the go-ahead to hold a rally at the Kamukunji Grounds.

Nairobi Police commander Adamson Bungei said Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party can assemble at the grounds as he warned against street protests.

“Their meeting at Kamkunji Grounds is allowed and they can proceed. They are not allowed to hold street protests,” he said.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga is set to lead the rally later today.

The planned demonstrations are in protest of the high cost of living, taxes imposed by the government among other issues.

There were reports of protesters throwing stones at motorists along Thika Road. In Mathare, the police dispersed a group that attempted to stage protests.

In the city centre, roadblocks have been erected along roads leading to the State House.

There was also a heavy police presence with a lot of businesses remaining closed.

Last week, President William Ruto told France 24 that the opposition was free to hold peaceful protests.

“I am happy because the opposition has agreed with the government on subsidising production. They have now shifted from mass action to political rallies,” President Ruto said.

“We are only asking them to stop destroying property during their protests.”
