President Uhuru Reorganizes Cabinet After Exit of CSs

President Uhuru Kenyatta has begun the process of reorganizing his government, weeks after a number of civil servants including cabinet secretaries resigned to pursue political ambitions.

While many expected Uhuru to make fresh appointments, particularly to the cabinet, the Head of State appears to have been compelled to allocate extra tasks to the existing CSs due to time constraints.

A number of CSs have taken on extra responsibilities to keep the ministries that have been left vacant running in a series of changes that have gone unnoticed over the last three weeks.

However, it is unclear whether the adjustments are only temporary or will stay in place until the August 9 General Election, when the current administration is scheduled to step down.

CS for Defense Eugene Wamalwa is one of the ministers appointed by the president to fill vacancies.

Wamalwa has taken up the responsibilities of previous Devolution CS Charles Keter, who quit last month to run for governor of Kericho.

On his Twitter page over the weekend, Wamalwa shared: “Hit the ground running after returning to the Ministry of Devolution where l have been appointed by President Kenyatta to act as l run the Ministry of Defence…”

Wamalwa was previously the head of the Devolution docket before Uhuru shifted him to the Defense ministry in September last year.

James Macharia, CS for Transport, was also chosen to lead the Water and Sanitation Ministry, a position left vacant by Sicily Kariuki, who is vying for the governorship of Nyandarua.

Monica Juma, the Secretary of State for Energy, is now also the Secretary of State for Petroleum and Mining, a portfolio that was formerly held by John Munyes. Munyes resigned on February 8 to run for governor of Turkana.

Following the departure of East African Community and Regional Development CS Adan Mohamed, President Uhuru appointed Betty Maina as the new Minister of Industrialization and Trade. Mohammed is a candidate for governor of Mandera.

The head of state is anticipated to replace Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS) who quit government to pursue political careers in coming days.
