Raila, Kalonzo Out of the Country on “Private Missions”

Raila Odinga, the Azimio Presidential Candidate, and Kalonzo Musyoka, his Chief Cabinet Secretary nominee, are both out of the country on private trips, according to sources within their camps.

Mr Musyoka is said to have left the country on Tuesday evening, while Mr Odinga is said to have left on Wednesday morning.

Officials in Mr Odinga’s camp were tight-lipped about the affair, only acknowledging a “brief travel” that took place just 48 hours after the Azimio manifesto was released.

Those who spoke to the Nation, on the other hand, said that multiple campaigns will continue ahead of Mr Odinga’s homecoming on Friday.

“We have different teams out but campaigns also require back office management. “Our captain has dashed out in the neighbourhood but will be back shortly. He has travelled into the neighbourhood for a day or so, however, I cannot release that officially,” a source is quoted by the daily.

“I’m sure his spokesperson will give details on the matter. Maybe it’s a fairly confidential consultation with regional leaders,’ they added.

Mr Odinga on Tuesday said he was leaving the country on Tuesday during the burial ceremony of Kajiado Central MP Elijah Memusi’s wife, Stellah Memusi.

He told mourners that the bereaved family had changed the burial date to accommodate his schedule.

“It’s such an honour that the family accorded me much respect by changing the funeral date to accommodate my schedule. Pushing the funeral two days prior to allow me to attend since I am going abroad tomorrow ( June 8, 2022) shows a lot of respect and love. It is humbling,” the former prime minister.

Mr Musyoka’s confidant, Machakos Town MP Dan Maanzo, also affirmed that the Wiper leader was out of the country.

“He left on Tuesday evening but I’m not sure whether they will meet with our presidential candidate, who I’m told also left this morning (yesterday),” Mr Maanzo told the daily.

Mr Odinga’s journey comes just two months after he returned from a tour to the United States.

The former premier had a town hall gathering with Kenyans in Washington DC during his April visit to the United States.

He also updated the Kenyan diaspora on the state of the nation, election preparedness, and his post-election plans.

He also took a break from campaigning in March, flying to the United Kingdom (UK) just hours after being named the Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate on March 12.

In the UK, Mr Odinga addressed the international community at the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

His visit came just a week after Deputy President William Ruto wrapped up his tour of the foreign nation, which included a speech at Chatham House.
