Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party spokesperson Prof Makau Mutua claims President William Ruto was the biggest winner following the March 9, 2019 handshake between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Monday, President Ruto critic said that contrary to reports that Uhuru betrayed Raila, he (Uhuru) was fully in support of the ODM leader’s presidency bid.
Prof Makau alleged that the retired President was betrayed by those around him, adding that the sitting head of state who was then the deputy president, controlled the most important aspects of the state.
“Although Mr Kenyatta supported Odinga’s presidency, he did not have the machinery of the state,” he said.

“I think what we know now is that Ruto superintended and controlled the biggest and most lethal elements of the state. It’s fair to say that Mr Kenyatta for reasons that historians will debate into the science of time, Kenyatta was betrayed by a lot of people around him.”
The political analyst who was speaking on the intrigues of the 2022 elections, stated that the imbalance of power meant it did not matter who Uhuru supported.
“Raila lost the presidency because even though Uhuru supported him, Ruto had control of the system,” he added.
He also averred that the former prime minister was set up to fail from the start.

Raila who is currently demanding the resignation of Dr Ruto, reckons he was rigged out in August 2022.
He has maintained that he beat the head of state by at least 2 million votes. Referring to an IEBC insider dossier, Raila has alleged that he garnered at least 8.1 million votes while Dr Ruto managed 5.7 million votes.
