Senator Malala Surrenders to Police Following NCIC Summon

Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala has surrendered to the police after the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) summoned him.

The Samuel Kobia-led commission summoned the legislator over “bedroom” remarks uttered on Sunday.

Malala had threatened to disrupt a meeting slated for Friday. It has been organised by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

The senator presented himself to Kakamega Central Police Station on Monday evening.

“He (Malala) clarified that what he said during the Maragoli Cultural Festival was a political statement, and that he does not intend to use violence or incite his followers into chaos during the rally,” Kakamega Central Sub-County Police Commander David Kabena told The Standard.

“Malala said he will maintain peace during the rally. He further said that on Friday, during the Bukhungu II event, he will be at Mumias; 32 kilometres away from the convention.”

Malala had earlier noted that the meeting which is meant to rally the Luhya nation behind Raila Odinga would not take place without ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi’s say so.

NCIC as a result summoned the legislator over the remarks which were deemed inflammatory.

“Kenya has no bedrooms and living rooms for any politician, and there is no space for locking out other politicians from any political side from any part of the country,” said Kobia in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Bukhungu meeting is yet to be issued with a permit.
