The suspect who claims to be a businesswoman was nabbed by officers from the Anti-narcotics Unit working closely with their counterparts from the Forensics and Cyber Crimes Units.

It is here that officers discovered Ksh13.4 million in cash and bags of bhang.

Prior to her arrest, she moved to court seeking anticipatory bail.

Through lawyer Danstan Omari, the suspect described herself as an upstanding citizen who has never broken the law in Kenya. She also claimed that she has never been arrested or charged with a crime.

She also asserted that she was being pursued by police on fabricated allegations and that they are using her as a scapegoat.

“The applicant is of the firm belief that the timing of the arrest is designed to intimidate and ensure that she does not continue running her business here in Kenya,” court papers read.

Kigunzu further asserted that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome are threatening to arrest her and that they are doing so in violation of her constitutional rights.

“The powers of arrest by the 1st (DCI) and 2nd (IG Koome) respondents are being abused and misused to harass, intimidate and oppress the applicant,” she said.

She continued by saying she was ready to use “a just and fair legal system in which her fundamental rights are respected.”

She is set to be arraigned later today.
