Too Late – Karua Criticizes IPOA Over Police Brutality Probe

Narc Kenya party leader and Azimio la Umoja co-principal Martha Karua has criticized the IPOA for its failure to denounce the excessive use of force by police.

This comes just a day after the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority said that it had opened an investigation into police behavior during the anti-government protests.

Karua criticized the IPOA for neglecting to denounce the use of excessive force by the police during the protests as well as the deployment of untrained police during demos.

“If you cannot outrightly condemn the use of manifestly excessive force by the police and the use of ununiformed armed police in demonstrations pending investigations then it is a case of too little too late,” Karua said.

On Saturday, IPOA said that it was looking into the use of force by police during protests.

This was following the three day anti-government demos which left a few people death and more than 30 others with injuries.

The cases that were recorded included shootings, police and civilian injuries, attacks on journalists, and civilian arrests.

According to IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori, the Authority is investigating any incidents that would have prevented police from carrying out their primary duty of defending life and property.

“Our investigations will take into account the fundamental rights and freedoms of all the individuals concerned, including members of the Police Service,” Makori said.

Makori also denounced the unlawful behavior of some members of the public, noting that the actions tragically resulted in the destruction of property and the harming of several police officers.
