Tycoon Jaswant Rai Withdraws Cases Challenging Lease of Mumias Sugar

Just days after being kidnapped by unidentified persons, billionaire industrialist Jaswant Rai has withdrawn all court cases contesting the lease of Mumias Sugar Company.

This comes days after President William Ruto promised to take action against people he accused of taking advantage of cane growers in the Western Region.

“Those stealing from Kenyans have three options, flee the country, go to jail or go to heaven,” warned the head of state.

The cases that had been preventing the revival of the once-giant sugar miller have also been dropped.

In a matter that has been pending in court for nearly two years, West Kenya Sugar, which is owned by the sugar baron, has filed three letters of withdrawal at the Court of Appeal to end their petitions contesting the award of Mumias to competitor Sarrai Group.

The billionaire, who also owns Kabras Sugar, made the decision just hours after Dubai-based Vartox Resource withdrew its lawsuit in the same court where the company had also contested the leasing of Mumias Sugar.

2019 saw Mumias Sugar Company placed under receivership due to outstanding loans owed to numerous regional banks and international organizations.

The mill was leased to the Sarrai Group of Uganda, who moved into the site in December 2021.

West Kenya disputed Sarrai’s take over as did the Dubai-based firm, which resulted in year-long court battles that shut down business at the mill.

Rai had filed a lawsuit challenging his younger brother Sarbi Singh Rai’s acquisition of the Mumias Sugar Company by the Uganda-based Sarrai Group.

They claimed in their appeal that there had been a lack of transparency in the Mumias Sugar Company’s 20-year lease to the Sarrai Group.

Rai filed three notices to the Court of Appeal signaling his desire to completely stop any opposition to the takeover.
