UDA Demands Action from CS Matiang’i Over Chaos at Jacaranda Rally

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has accused Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i of being too slow in taking action against those responsible for the violence at deputy president William Ruto’s rally in Jacaranda, Nairobi, on Sunday.

According to party secretary-general Veronica Maina, Matiang’i had turned a blind eye to the pandemonium since he was in support of ODM leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

ODM is being accused by the party of encouraging the violence that occurred at the gathering.

“Matiangi has publicly supported Raila. We are asking him to take off the political hat and save Kenyans from political intolerance. His ministry has remained silent on the matter but has acted very swiftly in other incidences,” Maina said.

UDA will write to Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, requesting a report on the progress of any investigations that will have been conducted, she said.

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama denied assertions by ODM that the violence was staged to gain sympathy from city voters.

“It is very clear that ODM orchestrated the violence. We had no reason to do that to our supporters,” he added.

On Sunday, Raila through his spokesperson David Onyango, claimed that Ruto sponsored the chaos witnessed at Jacaranda so as to provoke war in his Rift Valley backyard and cause the eviction of non-Kalenjins.

“The strange rage expressed by Deputy President William against Rt. Hon Raila Odinga this afternoon should be easy to understand. Ruto is simply setting the stage for the removal of Madoadoa from the Rift Valley and, if need be, start a war in the Rift Valley,” Raila said.

“It is not beyond Ruto to sponsor the disruption of his own rally so that he can have an excuse to start ethnic cleansing back at home.”
