Why Raila Chose Martha Karua as Running Mate

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition party presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga, chose me as his running mate because he cares about Kenya, Martha Karua has said.

During a meeting with civil society representatives on Friday, Karua claimed that the former Prime Minister had shown interest on issues that she cares about.

Raila would not have chosen her as his deputy if he was not serious about the change he wants to bring about if elected, said the Narc Kenya leader.

Karua reassured the civil society that the Azimio leader is totally committed to addressing the country’s problems.

“I will say this of Raila Odinga, the fact of choosing me as his running mate, a woman with a mind of her own, known focus on certain issues which the media call ‘msimamo kali, sijui ile si kali inakaa aje‘ for him to actually think of considering me, he is not only a man of courage, conviction and belief in himself but he has demonstrated seriousness on issues I hold dear (shared values),” she said.

“He wouldn’t have named me if he wasn’t serious about the things he’s saying on good governance, fight against corruption, human rights and rule of law. I believe that he is serious and I commit to you on behalf of my principal that we are serious about these issues and we will need you and every Kenyan to walk with us.”

She told the attendees that one of the things that drew her to Azimio even before she officially joined the outfit was the possibility of deepening the application of Kenya’s Constitution’s Article 43 on social and economic rights.

“The thought of social support to citizens at the bottom of the radar, the thought of improving our hospitals and having insurance that covers everybody in the name of Baba Care, the thought of supporting children to go to school, the thought of support to single mother households,” added the former Justice minister.
