Winnie Odinga Recalls Day Raila Almost Died

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga almost died last year, his lastborn daughter Winnie has revealed.

Winnie told the Nation that her father almost lost his life twice after he contracted Covid-19 in March 2021.

The opposition leader was put in isolation at his Karen home after receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

The former prime minister was first admitted due to “fatigue” but later tested positive for the virus that killed thousands of Kenyans.

“He is responding well to the treatment he is receiving … and remains upbeat. We are continuing to monitor his progress,” Raila’s doctor David Olunya said.

Winnie disclosed that her father almost lost his life while in isolation. She was helping his nurses take care of him.

She recalled walking into his room and finding him gasping for air after his oxygen mask fell off his face.

The second time, Winnie who doubles as her father’s personal assistant, found the 77-year-old opposition leader “blank and motionless”.

His body temperature, she recounted, was terribly high. She gave him paracetamol which helped bring it down.

Medics agreed that were it not for her intervention, the worst could have happened.

Aware that she was risking her life, Winnie took turns with his caregivers to ensure he was looked after around the clock.

She also learnt how to administer his medicine and injections.
